Good Morning Britain

Good Morning Britain is ITV’s breakfast programme offering, on air between 6am and 9am every weekday.

Although GMB in its current format launched on April 28, 2014, there has been a similar daytime show in the same slot since TV-am in February 1983.

TV-am was replaced by GMTV at the start of 1993 and later Daybreak, which lasted from September 6 2010 to April 25 2014.

Good Morning Britain’s presenters were Susanna Reid, Ben Shephard, Charlotte Hawkins and Sean Fletcher when it launched on April 28 2014.

Ben and Kate Garraway split appearances from September 2015 until November that year when Piers Morgan joined as Susanna’s regular co-host.

The controversial anchor stormed off set after a row with Alex Beresford about Meghan Markle on March 9 2021. Hours later, Piers quit as host of the show.

Following his departure, and in the absence of a replacement, a number of stand-ins have taken his place.

Richard Madeley, Adil Ray, Bill Turnbull, Alastair Campbell and Ranvir Singh have all stepped in to replace Piers.

The show also has a host of experts including Martin Lewis and Dr Hilary Jones. Andi Peters is also a regular, fronting competitions on the show.

Phillip Schofield has also co-hosted, in December 2014, as part of a 24-hour TV presenting challenge for Text Santa. He also interviewed David Cameron live from 10 Downing Street later in the programme.

GMB brings together topical news, lifestyle, showbiz and entertainment items together with the presenting panel offering their views on the subject under discussion.

The magazine-style show also features celebrity interviews, personal finance advice, live reports from across the UK and human interest stories.

Since Piers’ departure, GMB ratings have reportedly taken a tumble, hitting a low of 451,000 in June 2021. Ratings hit a record 1.9 million high the day before the controversial host quit.

GMB was nominated for three TRIC Awards in 2015 as well as a TV Choice Award for the Best Daytime TV programme in 2016 and 2017.

Two BAFTA TV Award nominations followed in 2019, along with a Royal Television Society nomination in 2020.

Award wins have been few and far between though, with Susanna being the most decorated of the show’s hosts.

She was named the TRIC Newscaster of the Year in 2015 and won Best TV Presenter at the 2017 National Reality TV Awards. GMB won Best Talk Show at the ceremony that same year.

In July 2016, a special live episode from inside Buckingham Palace was broadcast. Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway took viewers on a tour around the state rooms. Laura Tobin, meanwhile, presented the weather forecast from the Palace Gardens.

Production moved from London’s South Bank to Television Centre in April 2018.
