Alex Jones receives odd maternity leave gift from The One Show

Its what she's always wanted...

The One Show star Alex Jones has received a rather odd leaving present as she heads off on maternity leave.

The TV presenter, 42, said a temporary goodbye yesterday (April 26th) and was told that, as a parting gift, she now has a train seat named after her.

The show aired an old clip of Alex complaining that there wasn’t a Welsh train carriage bearing her name – an honour enjoyed by Welsh legends including Katherine Jenkins and Dame Shirley Bassey.

She’s a national hero for Wales – why shouldn’t she get one too?

It seems The One Show bosses were wondering the same thing, as it was revealed they had managed to pull some strings and get her name added to a train on the Snowdon Mountain Railway – albeit just a seat!

She laughed: “I’m chuffed!”

Her temproary co-host, EastEnders actor Shane Richie, replied: “I’ve got to be honest with you. It was originally for Aled Jones.”

But Alex assured him: “I don’t mind, actually. I’m thrilled.”

Presenting her last episode (for now) alongside Shane, Alex signed off in typically wacky fashion by interviewing London marathon runners dressed in oversized rhino and bizarre ‘human tent’ costumes, as well as an interview with film actor Kiefer Sutherland.

Alex said goodbye to her regular co-host, Matt Baker, on Thursday’s episode as he has Fridays off.

They said an emotional farewell as Matt pointed out it will be “quite some time” before they’re reuinited.

Alex told him: “It does feel weird… It’s going to be odd, yes but it’ll be quick. I’ll be back in the autumn. Keep the seat warm.”

Matt said: “It goes without saying, I’ll miss you.”

Alex replied: “Oh don’t, I’m going to cry!”

The presenter revealed live on air in December that she’s expecting her second child with husband Charlie Thomson.

Her maternity leave stand-ins were revealed earlier this week.

Stars including Emma Willis, Stacey Dooley and Mel Giedroyc will be among those filling in for Alex, in addition to regular One Show guest hosts Angellica Bell, Angela Scanlon, and Michelle Acklerey.

More famous names are likely to be confirmed soon.
