Rod Stewart gives his reaction to joining The X Factor as a judge

He does have one concern about appearing on a TV singing competition

| Updated:

Veteran rocker Sir Rod Stewart could be tempted by a role on the overhauled X Factor, it seems.

Rod, 74, appeared to be hesitant to give a straight answer to Lorraine Kelly’s query about adding his wealth of showbiz experience to Simon Cowell’s singing series on her ITV show earlier today.

But even though the Maggie May star joked telly bosses wouldn’t be able to stump up for his pay packet, Rod did not rule out joining a judging panel entirely.

Likening his suitability for the job to Sir Tom Jones on The Voice, Lorraine wondered whether Rod would take the TV gig if approached.

“Not yet,” he smiled.

Rod continued: “They couldn’t afford me anyway.”

But as Lorraine pressed for a definitive reply, music legend Rod admitted he was not completely opposed to the idea.

He did, however, express a mild concern for whether he’d be able to contain himself at all times during any talent show appearance.

“I wouldn’t mind it, I’d just worry that I’d swear,” said Rod.

Acknowledging Lorraine’s contribution that he could prove a very “honest” mentor, he agreed: “I would. Brutally honest. I do have a lot of experience.”

Fans on Twitter seemed to approve of a possible recruitment for either The X Factor or The Voice.

“Yes please!” one responded to a tweet from Lorraine’s show account.

“Oh yesss,” added another.

A third said: “Would be great on either.”

However, another remarked: “Why would he let himself be lumbered with a failing show?”

And yet another person commented: “Sir Rod if they can afford @RealSirTomJones they can afford you mate.”

Set to embark on what is being billed as his biggest UK tour ever, Rod has also promised to act a little more like his age on stage.

“I’m not going to take my trousers down, not this time, maybe when I get really desperate I will,” he told the Express and Star.

“When you forget to put your trousers on, maybe that’s the time to pack it in.”

– Lorraine airs on ITV on weekday mornings at 8.30am
