Coronation Street cleared by Ofcom over Rana death

The broadcasting regulator have ruled in the soap's favour

Ofcom has decided not to investigate Coronation Street over the death of Rana Habeeb after over 200 viewers complained.

Rana’s demise in the factory roof collapse in March left many fans distraught, so much so that 236 of them complained to the regulating body.

They were unhappy that Rana was killed off just before her wedding to Kate Connor as they felt it was harmful to the LGBT+ community by suggesting all gay relationships end in tragedy.

Actress Bhavna Limbachia confirmed it was her decision to kill Rana off as she felt that was the only way Kate and Rana’s love story would ever end.

But that still didn’t make fans happy.

Ofcom has now revealed to the Mirror.co.uk that they will not be investigating the soap.

They said: “We considered complaints that this storyline negatively portrayed gay relationships.

“In our view, the untimely death of the character was typical of this soap’s dramatic plotlines and would not have exceeded most viewers’ expectations.”

It had been confirmed months before that someone would die in the factory roof collapse, and that the stunt would see the emergence of a new cobbles supervillain.

But Rana’s death was only revealed when the episode aired.

She had been due to marry Kate, who was waiting for her at the venue. Rana had left her handbag with the rings and vows in in the factory office so had popped in there to get it.

Despite efforts to save her, Rana died in Kate’s arms after suffering fatal injuries.

Carla Connor is being blamed for the disaster as she confessed she knew the roof was unstable. However, viewers know someone was seen tampering with it before the accident causing it to cave in.

A standalone mental health episode is being planned for Carla as she struggles to deal with everything that’s gone on and during that the identity of the roof saboteur will be revealed.
