Coronation Street’s Beverley Callard denies exit rumours

She'll stay on the show as long as they'll have her

Coronation Street’s Liz McDonald will celebrate 30 years on the cobbles later this year – and actress Beverley Callard has no plans to go anywhere.

Despite taking time out to star in various theatre shows, including the Rocky Horror Show and The Thunder Girls, Beverley has revealed she loves working on Corrie and wants to stay as long as they’ll have her.

In an interview with Digital Spy Beverley explained people thought she was leaving when her role in The Thunder Girls was announced. But she assured fans she’s not.

“I love playing Liz. We have a writing team that love writing for her and I really don’t want to go. It’s 30 years in the autumn, so long may it continue.”

She went on to add that she wanted to be on the show when it celebrates its 60th birthday in December 2020.

And with 30 years of drama behind her, that doesn’t look set to stop any time yet: “The stories that are coming up for Liz are just fantastic,” she revealed.

“There’s lots of drama, lots of comedy. So it should be good fun and I’m definitely not going anywhere.”

After the return of Jim McDonald last year, Liz was left heartbroken.

Her ex-husband came back with news that their daughter Katie, who was born prematurely and died at just one day old in 1992, was still alive after a mix up at the hospital.

It turned out the whole thing was a devastating con for Jim and his new girlfriend, Hannah (who was masquerading as Katie) to get revenge on Liz and son Steve for sending him to prison.

When Liz found out she gave Jim what for and told him to get out of her life for good. After several previous reunions, it looked like there was no way back for their marriage this time.

But rumours have since been circulating he will return and Beverley says she’d be thrilled if that happened – and in fact is on board for a complete McDonald family reunion.

“I’d love for them to [return]. Whether they will or not, I don’t know. But more than anything, I’d love that.”

Liz and Jim’s other son, Steve’s twin brother, Andy, lives in Spain, and was last seen on screen in 2009 when he came back for Steve’s wedding to Becky Granger.

Coronation Street is on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
