Six inches of snow could fall in parts of the UK over the next few days, according to a report.
Sleet, hail and thunderstorms are also forecast for this week – with heavy showers expected across most areas today.
The Met Office says the unpleasant conditions will continue throughout Tuesday, with temperatures falling again during the night.
A 700-mile ‘polar flume’ is expected to cause a slump to below freezing – and it could go as low as -5C.

Snowfall on Tuesday is expected to be limited to higher ground in Scotland and north west England.
And while it might be found elsewhere on Wednesday – predicted to be the coldest day the week – the six inches forecast is also likely to fall on hills and mountains.
An inch or two of snow is also likely to appear across the Pennines.
Thunderous showers will move away by the evening but overnight frost and patchy freezing fog will bring a chill to Thursday morning.

Forecasters are expecting more rain towards the end of the week – but mostly in the north.
Those showers should ease off by Friday, bringing milder weather with drier and brighter conditions in most places.
However, the wet and the wind is expected to continue into the middle of April.
The Met Office said: “As it turns more settled temperatures may become warmer in places, but with the risk of overnight frost.”
