‘Polar plume’ from Iceland to blast Britain tomorrow as temperatures plummet

Mother's Day could see gale-force winds of up to 40mph

Forecasters have warned that UK weather conditions are about to worsen thanks to conditions sweeping in from Iceland.

Temperatures in parts of the southern England could reach has high as 20C today (March 30), but it’s not likely to last.

According to reports, a 700-mile wide ‘polar plume’ all the way from Iceland is heading over.

Tweeting about this afternoon’s weather forecast, the Met Office wrote: “There will be sunny spells across Wales and southern and central England.

“Rather cloudy with some rain across northern England and southern Scotland. Showers across Northern Ireland and northern and central Scotland.”

But from Sunday, the ‘polar plume’ will limit highs to between 7C and 10C for most of the country, at least until Thursday next week.

For parts of Scotland, Wales and northern England, plunging temperatures will bring slow flurries and nights below zero.

Tomorrow will see gale-force winds reaching as fast as 40mph and rising close to 60mph in the north as Wednesday approaches.

It comes as the schools prepare to break up for the Easter holidays and follows reports of an incoming three-month heatwave.

According to The Mirror, RAC spokesperson Simon Williams said: “Stormy weather ahead is bad timing for the Easter rush. Motorists should check forecasts and plan journeys accordingly.”

And Alex Burkill, a forecaster with the Met Office, joked that while British Summer Time starts tomorrow, it seems “no-one told the weather”.

He explained: “Markedly lower temperatures than recently will be seen from Mother’s Day, with cold air from Iceland and Greenland.

“Saturday had a chance of 20C, with sunny spells for England.”

Speaking further, Alex said there are indications of brighter conditions and above-normal temperatures as Easter gets into full swing.

Similarly, another forecaster with the Met Office said the second half of April is expected to see “rather warm” temperatures.

Other reports have suggested we’re in for the hottest Spring ever, with temperatures set to soar to 26C.
