Strictly results: Peak rage from viewers as Tom and Amy are eliminated

A very unpopular decision

| Updated:

So it’s fair to say after tonight’s Strictly results show there are some very unhappy viewers around the country.

And most of them are venting their spleen on social media right now!

Tom Fletcher and Amy Dowden were eliminated tonight (Sunday, November 21) after losing the dance-off to Rhys Stephenson and Nancy Xu.

Stand-in judge Cynthia Erivo, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke all chose to save Rhys. Shirley Ballas said she would have saved Tom, but she was already out-voted.

Many felt the amiable duo didn’t deserve to be in the bottom two, let alone be booted out of the competition.

Strictly Week 9 scoreboard

On Saturday night, Tom and Amy found themselves joint bottom of the leaderboard, alongside Dan Walker and Nadia Bychkova.

  • AJ and Kai’s Waltz to Edelweiss from The Sound of Music scored 38.
  • Rhys and Nancy’s Jive to Footloose from Footloose scored 32.
  • Tom and Amy’s Couple’s Choice to On My Own from Les Misérables scored 31.
  • Rose and Giovanni’s Quickstep to Love Is An Open Door from Frozen scored 38.
  • John and Johannes’s Viennese Waltz to Chim Chim Cher-ee from Mary Pop scored 32.
  • Tilly and Nikita’s Couple’s Choice to Revolting Children from Matilda scored 40.
  • Dan and Nadia’s Charleston to Good Morning from Singin’ In The Rain scored 31.

Saturday had been a very emotional night for Tom, who’d dedicated his Musicals Week dance – Couple’s Choice to On My Own from Les Misérables – to his younger sister Carrie Hope Fletcher, a West End star.

He noted after his performance: “I’ve had the best week and I’ve loved every second of it and it meant a lot to me because of my sister.”

Support for Tom

The McFly star’s fans were unhappy with the judges’ feedback on Saturday night, which included Shirley Ballas telling him his performance needed more emotion.

And Motsi Mabuse told him: “You wanted to get every single step right and you controlled yourself a little bit too much.”

She continued: “But still, when you are speaking about dancing, there was still a high quality of technique in your dancing.”

One viewer raged: “How was it only Tom that got negative comments and none of the comments were even about his dancing? Are they trying to get Tom out or something?

Another argued: “Best dance of the night was definitely Tom Fletcher.”

Yet another waded in: “I thought the performance was full of emotion, the judges must have been watching a completely different performance to what I was!”
After the elimination announcement, one moaned: “So now Tom is out?! I’m fuming… better dance than at least two there last night.”
Another added: “I’m so upset for Tom. Tom deserved more.”

Right time for Tom to go?

Of course, everyone has their favourites on Strictly and some agreed it was Tom’s time to leave the competition.

One said: “I don’t get what all the fuss is about. Tom’s dance was simply the weakest on the night. And as for the cheesy sob story with his sister??? Purlease!!

Another harsh critic added: “The correct person went, I thought it was a dreadful dance.”

“Why is Dan still there?”

Dan Walker has been causing some controversy over the past few weeks, with some viewers feeling he had outstayed his welcome. And those critics were still out in force after tonight’s show.

“Dan was extremely lucky to get a Charleston and Singin’ in the Rain. That’s like a golden ticket. And the difficulty level of the routine was not high,” one complained.

Another commented: “I really hope Dan fans get to see him dance a Rhumba or AT next week. And then justify him staying in.”

But he too had support with one pointing out: “To everyone wondering why Dan Walker is still in strictly have you considered the fact that maybe, just maybe, some of us enjoy watching him dance and develop each week? Just saying!”
