Office worker threatens to report her colleague to HR if she doesn’t bake her a birthday cake

Not exactly a happy birthday!

Office birthdays are usually celebrated with cake. However, one employee took things a step too far and demanded that her co-worker bake her a birthday cake – or face the wrath of the HR department.

Uploading a series of text messages to Reddit, the reluctant baker revealed that the demanding colleague had heard she’d made a cake for someone in her team and asked if she would bake one for her too.

The message read: “Its my birthday next week, can you bake me a cake and bring it to the office? It’s free right [sic]?”

The office Mary Berry replied: “We usually pool money to buy a cake or someone volunteers to make it for them instead. Are you sure you want me to bake it?”

She added: “I’ve never spoken to anyone on your side of the office and I don’t know if it would make any sense if I came to give it to you and your team haha.”

The message didn’t go down well.

“I was gonna buy a cake but its free to ask you to make so can you do this cake, on Monday bring it to my desk at two and ill just give it to everyone so its not awkward for you to take to my people [sic],” she said.

She added that the chocolate cake featured Ferrero Rocher and Lindt truffles but that the colleague could “just count the cost as my birthday gift lol”.

After she offered to make the birthday girl a cake using a cake mix or some cookies, she replied: “WTF? Ur joking right [sic]?”

Sticking to her guns, the woman insisted she had a busy weekend of dogsitting lined up and suggested that she ordered a cake instead, to ensure it’s “up to your standards”.

And that’s where things really started to escalate.

The birthday girl replied: “U think I have the money for that? Please!!! You’re my coworker. It’s my birthday. I want this cake [sic].”

Attempting to end the conversation politely, the woman responded: “Sorry, I really can’t. See you tomorrow.”

Clearly upset at her lack of birthday cake, the woman then started issuing threats.

She said: “I’m going to avoid you in the office from now on, and tell everyone how you really are [sic].”

The spat ended with a thinly-veiled threat to report the woman to HR for not making her the cake.

“Watch your back. HR might want a word with you soon,” she said.
