She allegedly had a fight with her boyfriend Lewis Burton

Fans of Love Island have called for Caroline Flack to be fired from her hosting job after being arrested and charged with assault.

An ambulance was later called with Lewis, 27, thought to be "treated for injuries".

Following the news, fans of Love Island have taken to Twitter to call for host Caroline to be sacked.

Caroline Flack should be replaced this is disgusting.

One person said: "If it was a male who assaulted their female partner they would be fired from their public job immediately, Caroline Flack should be no different I’m sorry. Domestic abuse goes both ways!"

Another wrote: "Caroline Flack should be fired. Domestic abuse is never acceptable. #LoveIsland."

A third tweeted: "I seriously hope @LoveIsland looks at this and realises if she was a man assaulting his girlfriend he’d be sacked!

"Caroline Flack should be replaced this is disgusting #LoveIsland #SackTheFlack #EqualRights."

A fourth added: "If any male TV presenter was arrested and charged with battering their partner they would be rightly sacked.

"Let's hope it works both ways and Caroline Flack is gone before the start of the new Love Island @ITV."

TV presenter Rick Edwards even tweeted to ITV2 saying he was "pretty free in January" to host the winter version of Love Island.

He said: "Well, ITV2. I'm pretty free in January, I'll happily travel to South Africa, and I've never been charged with assault."

He then joked: "Full disclosure though, I was once charged with public urination in New York. Hope that's not a problem."

Other viewers have called for presenter Maya Jama to replace Caroline.

It comes after a Met Police spokesperson said in a statement: "Caroline Flack, 40, of Islington was charged on Friday, 13 December with assault by beating. She will appear on bail at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 23 December.

"This follows an incident at approximately 05:25hrs on Thursday, 12 December after reports of a man being assaulted. He was not seriously injured."

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson claimed they were called out to reports of a "person unwell" in the Islington area.

They said: "We were called yesterday (Thursday 12 December) at 5.28am to reports of a person unwell in Islington. We sent an ambulance to the scene and took a person to hospital."
