Birds Eye divides Brits with recipe for fish finger LASAGNE

Foodies don't know what to think

Birds Eye has divided Brits by proposing a lasagne filled with fish fingers.

The food company offered up a recipe for the bizarre concoction on Facebook, swapping the usual minced meat for 30 of its own breaded fish fingers.

The recipe, which included Bechamel sauce, peas, spinach and other ingredients, got users debating whether or not it’s an acceptable mash-up of two of the nation’s favourite meals.

Some users commenting on the post appeared to think it was a great idea.

One said, “Is it weird that I really wanna try this?” while another wrote, “This actually looks so nice” and a third put, enthusiastically, “Yes yes yes OMG yes”.

Birds Eye also shared its recipe in collaboration with food site Twisted and, safe to say, not everyone was on board.

Someone wrote, alongside a green-faced emoji: “Pasta and fish fingers?”

Another health-conscious user said: “Not very healthy? Three lots of carbs, fish finger coating, flour in sauce plus lasagne sheets with two lots of butter? The veg part’s ok but carbs outweigh the good stuff, protein is then pretty insignificant, me thinks?”

“Omg no,” protested one user, adding: “Love lasagne and love fish fingers but some things are not meant for each other.”

Someone else said, with a vomitting emoji: “I love a fish finger and I love lasagne, but that is rank… it’s a no from me.”

Still others took issue with the amount it would potentially cost to follow Birds Eye’s exact recipe.

“At £2 – £3 a packet for 10, needing 40 fish fingers makes that an expensive lasagne,” one complained.

“So using bird eye fish fingers, this dish only cost £15 to make… bargain,” commented another with crying-laughing emojis.

Fish finger lasagne might sound like something Birds Eye has made up on the spot, but it’s actually an established – albeit niche – dish.

Great British Bake Off 2015 winner Nadiya Hussain even had her own version of it in her 2018 cook book, Nadiya’s Family Favourites.

The mum-of-three spoke about breaking long-held conventions with her cooking during an appearance on Loose Women.

As reported by GoodToKnow, Nadiya told the panel: “I just think we are so often told what we can and can’t do, what we can eat and what we cannot. And it’s just like blah blah blah.

“Just stop telling me what I can eat and what I should wear and what I shouldn’t eat. Just like, I just want to eat something that is delicious on the plate and I want to enjoy it with my family and my kids and you know what, sometimes it is a fish finger lasagne and there is nothing wrong with that.”
