A five-year-old British boy has died after falling into a swimming pool at a villa on Spain’s Costa del Sol.

The youngster and his family were reportedly on holiday at La Vinuela, a village around 18 miles northeast of Malaga.

Police, paramedics and an air ambulance rushed to the property, according to the Sun, but the boy could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A source quoted by the publication said the youngster’s parents were eating breakfast in the villa when he wandered away and fell in the pool.

It is believed to have happened around 10am today (June 20) at the home of the boy’s grandad, a British expat.

His grandparents have lived in the La Vinuela area for years and his dad grew up there, a neighbour claimed.

The name of the dead boy has not been released, but he is understood to have a little sister around 18 months old. It is also not known where in the UK he was from.

In the Sun’s report, La Vinuela mayor Jose Juan Jimenez said: “The town hall is here for the family in whatever they might need. The grandfather lives here and the boy’s father has spent time living here.

“The little boy fell into the pool and didn’t know how to swim. I deeply regret this terrible tragedy that has occurred today and want to offer this youngster’s loved ones whatever support they need at such a difficult time for them.”

A post-mortem is reportedly set to take place today at Malaga’s Institute of Forensic Medicine.

A source there confirmed a call was received at 10am to say “a child had fallen into a swimming pool” and had been pulled out, “but was unconscious”.

They said the tragedy happened in part of La Vinuela known as Los Romanes.

The source continued: “An air ambulance was sent to the scene along with a normal ambulance but we were later informed the boy had died.”

A local investigating judge will now head up a routine investigation into the incident.

It follows a similar tragic incident earlier this week on the Greek island of Kos, where a boy, also five, reportedly drowned in a pool while his mum and dad slept.

Theo Treharne-Jones is thought to have woken earlier than his parents and gone into the pool.
