After the mercury nudged 25 Celsius in some parts of the country yesterday, things could change dramatically today.

Even though the temperature will still stay warm, the storms are set to kick off what will be an unsettled week ahead.

Rising temperatures coupled with low pressure may create “massive cumulonimbus clouds” as a plume of “very warm air” washes in from Europe.

The Met Office says, “whilst some places within warning areas could miss thunderstorms altogether and enjoy a warm, bright day, where these thunderstorms do develop – torrential downpours, hail, lightning and gusty winds are likely and a few spots could see as much as 40-60mm of rain in one hour – which is very unusual for the UK.”

“With the potential for a large volume of water in a short time, there is a significant risk of flash flooding, fast flowing or deep flowing water causing danger to life and very difficult driving conditions in places.”

“As such we are urging the public to keep a close eye on our forecasts and warnings, especially on Met Office social media and video broadcasts as these will capture the latest details for your area.”

It was hoped that next week would bring temperatures in the 30s.

As the continent basks in 40C heat, it was been said that Britain will feel the benefit as hot air moves westwards.

Temperatures are set to soar to 30C next Wednesday (June 26) and Thursday (June 27) in some areas, meaning they could be the hottest days of the year so far.

However, the humidity and hot air means there’s still a risk of thunderstorms for some areas.
