Heavy rain on the way as the temperatures plummet to below freezing

Risk of thunder across the UK for Sunday

Brits could feel the cold tonight after the recent spell of warm, sunny weather as conditions are predicted to drop to below freezing.

Heavy rain is also forecast by the Met Office for parts of the country – with experts saying Sunday will be “more unsettled”.

Showers are expected in the north and Scotland. But the south should see some sunny moments, even though thunderstorms could break out.

The Met Office told The Sun: “Rain will be coming in from the East to northern England and Scotland.

“It could get quite heavy in Scotland and the eastern slopes.”

Explaining low pressure moving in from Europe will bring showery weather, the Met Office added: “The weekend will be more unsettled compared to what we have seen.”

Northern Ireland and Wales are said to expect mixed conditions – with the whole of the UK at risk of experiencing thunder.

BBC weather presenter Sarah Keith-Lucas is reported to have told the Express website: “Quite an unsettled picture, fairly showery, but there still will be some sunny spells to enjoy out there.”

“Heading through Saturday night and overnight into Sunday, we keep quite a bit of cloud around in general, particularly the further north you are with some patchy rain again in the north-west,” she continued.

The forecaster added: “Sunshine breaking through that cloud through the morning, but by the afternoon there will again be some of these showers dotted around, particularly down the spine of the country.”

According to BBC Weather, Monday could see scattered showers develop into heavier rain later on in the day.

Rain is also predicted for Tuesday but Wednesday should enjoy some drier weather.
