Emmerdale SPOILER: Ross Barton struggles to cope in aftermath of acid attack

His injuries will be life changing

Emmerdale kicks off one of its most controversial stories ever tonight when Ross Barton becomes the (unintended) victim of an acid attack.

Poor Ross, who only lost his mother and brother a few months ago, gets caught in the crossfire of the brutal feud between the Dingle family and newcomer Joe Tate.

Joe cruelly messed with Debbie’s head for months pretending to be Tom Waterhouse and in love with her, before he revealed his true identity and that he was after revenge on Charity for killing his dad, Chris Tate.

He also had the Dingles’ home, Wishing Well Cottage bulldozed a couple of weeks ago – almost killing Noah and Samson in the process.

So it’s understandable that Debbie would want some kind of revenge.

She urges local drug-dealing wrong’un Simon to get inside Joe’s head and mess him up.

But Simon has other ideas and – without Debbie knowing – decides to go after him with a corrosive substance.

Only Simon gets the wrong man and throws acid in Ross’ face.

He ends up critically ill in hospital and Debbie’s dad – Cain – finds out that she’s responsible for the attack.

He urges Debbie to go and visit Ross in hospital but it’s not long before Joe’s man-servant Graham reveals he knows they were behind the brutal attack.

Michael Parr who plays Ross has spoken out about the tough storyline, saying: “It’s a big responsibility and one that I was very nervous about taking on.

“I know it’s a reality for some people and it’s so important to get it right and do the story justice.

“The Emmerdale team have done extensive research and we really want to raise awareness of the devastating consequences an attack like this has on a person’s life.”

Next week viewers will see Ross try to deal with those consequences in the aftermath of the attack.

In hospital he will battle through trauma and anger over what’s happened with those close to him also struggling to cope, including Debbie who is riddled with guilt.
