Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s neighbours given “over the top” rules on how to treat royal couple

Some locals were baffled

| Updated:

People living near Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s Frogmore Cottage home have reportedly been briefed on how to treat them.

Neighbours of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been given a set of rules to follow whenever they meet the high-profile couple – including never asking to see two-month-old baby Archie.

Speaking to The Sun, a source said: “It would be funny if it wasn’t so over the top.”

The rules, issued at a residents’ meeting, are said to have taken locals by surprise.

One member of the community said the Sussexes are more demanding than the Queen, claiming: “It’s extraordinary. We’ve never heard anything like it. Everyone who lives on the estate works for the royals and knows how to behave respectfully. We aren’t told how to behave around the Queen like this. She’s very happy for people to greet her.”

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson insisted the royal couple had nothing to do with creating the rules.

They explained: “The Duke and Duchess had no knowledge of this briefing and no involvement in the concept or the content. This was a well-intentioned briefing to help a small local community know how to welcome two new residents and help them with any potential encounter.

“There was no handout or letter. The talk was undertaken by a local manager and was widely viewed as being well received.”

It follows reports that Frogmore Cottage had become like a “fortress” as privacy continues to be a leading concern for the new parents.

Royal biographer Katie Nicholl explained during a TV appearance that secluded living was a “key factor” for Harry and Meghan.

She told ITV host Christine Lampard: “We know that they’re living this wonderful tucked-away life at Frogmore Cottage which is pretty much, from what I hear, a fortress.

“Privacy’s the key factor.”

The Sussexes came under fire earlier in the summer after it was revealed £2.4 million of public money had been spent on renovating their home near Windsor.
