Met Office issues wind warning as 30C heatwave arrives

Motorists have been warned

Changeable is a word that’s often used to describe the weather in Britain.

And that seems appropriate for what’s said to be in store for the next couple of days.

As previously reported, much of the country is set to enjoy soaring temperatures on Friday and Saturday as a 2000-mile-wide ‘Saharan plume’ sweeps over this part of Europe.

However, experts have also warned that strong winds will batter Somerset, Devon and Cornwall in the next 48 hours.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for the area, and advised that the blustery weather could cause problems for motorists.

Its official website states: “Some strong, gusty winds are expected and may bring some travel disruption.

“Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely.

“Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer.

“Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely.”

The winds could also wreak havoc at the Glastonbury music festival, which is taking place this weekend.

Many parts of the UK are in for a scorcher this weekend, however.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell told The Sun Online: “The heat at the end of this week can be traced back to North Africa, but that heat has seeped into Spain and France, which will see record-breaking temperatures.

“That will then seep into the UK as we go into Friday and Saturday.

“In Scotland, Northern Ireland and South East England, there is plenty of sunshine to be had. Temperatures on the south coast will reach 28C.”

The Met Office also warned that pollen and UV levels will be high over the next couple of days.

Take care, wherever you happen to be!
