Elderly wheelchair user dies after rolling into lake

They were pulled from the water by members of the public

An OAP in a wheelchair died after he fell into a lake at a beauty spot in Staffordshire.

Passersby reportedly rushed to help the man, 80, when he entered the water in his wheelchair around 11am on Sunday (June 23).

Paramedics raced to Westport Lake in Stoke-on-Trent, where the incident happened, and took the patient to hospital.

Doctors were sadly unable to save him and he later died.

According to the Mirror, a spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed emergency crews were called at 11.14am to reports of a “patient in the water at Westport Lake”.

They said: “We sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer, a BASICS doctor and a community first responder. On arrival, we found one patient, a man, who was in a serious condition.

“He received specialist trauma care at the scene and was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital.”

A Staffordshire Police spokesperson said officers were called at 11.20am and revealed the man had been retrieved from the water by members of the public.

They continued: “[He] was taken to hospital by West Midlands Ambulance Service where he sadly died a few hours later.

“There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances and a report is being prepared for HM Coroner.”

Police confirmed that a formal ID is now set to take place.

Westport Lake is located in Longbridge Hayes, Newcastle-under-Lyme, around four miles from Stoke-on-Trent.

It follows reports of a Brit drowning off Spain’s Costa Dorada.

The 31-year-old tourist reportedly fell off a hired pedalo and was dragged out to sea, where he got into into difficulty.
