Britain braced for -5C freeze as ‘polar plume’ brings snow and ice

Weather conditions are going to get worse

Brits have been enjoying a spell of warm weather for the past week, but that’s soon coming to an end.

Forecasters are predicting temperatures will plummet in the coming days as ice and snow sweep across the country.

The mercury even dropped as low as -5C in northern Scotland on Sunday morning and weather conditions are only set to get worse.

Northern England and Scotland are expected to see frosts, and heavy rain will at times turn into sleet, hail and even snow by Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

Sunday is expected to start off cloudy with patches of rain and, in the south coast, temperatures will hit highs of 12C.

However, by Monday it will become more overcast and much of the country will have persistent showers.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell told The Sun: “Monday will not be a bad day for England and Wales as it will be dry with sunny spells.

“But the rest of the week from Tuesday onwards can be summed up as ‘April showers’. And by night, there will be a risk of frost so gardeners need to take note of that!

“Away from the main towns and cities, temperatures will fall down to -1 and -2 degrees at night.”

Meanwhile, Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell told The Express: “Temperatures fell to around -5 degrees in the countryside this morning and it is a chilly start with a widespread frost for Northern Ireland and parts of northern England too.

“It is a much cloudier picture across the south compared to recent days.

“That blanket of cloud lingering into the afternoon but there is a chance we could see some brighter spells by the middle part of the day.”

It comes as it’s predicted a 700-mile wide ‘polar plume’ from Iceland is set to arrive in the UK in the coming days.

From Sunday, the ‘polar plume’ will limit highs to between 7C and 10C for most of the country, at least until Thursday next week.
