Britain bashed by April snow showers before three-month ‘heatwave’ beds in

Winter doesn't seem to be over just yet

| Updated:

Britain has been enjoying some warmer temperatures this week, however, snow and thunderstorms are on the way.

According to the Met Office, northern parts of the UK could also face a spring blanket of snow from next week before a three-month ‘heatwave’ sweeps in.

The Met Office said a high pressure system sitting over the country at the moment is what is bringing the warmer air.

However, as the system moves away on Saturday, Sunday will be a “transition day” as colder air sweeps in.

Weather maps show thunderstorms will strike south eastern parts of the country, including London.

There will also be isolated storms in Cornwall and the northern tips of Scotland.

A forecaster told The Sun Online that next week will feel “rather unsettled and colder” and there will be a chance of “overnight frost with heavy outbreaks of rain”.

A Met Office forecast said: “Next week will be off to a chilly but mainly fine start on Monday, though it will gradually become more changeable through the week.

“There will be rain and strong winds at times, mainly in the northwest of the UK, where gales are likely. Some rain is possible in the south too, but there will be more in the way of dry weather. The unsettled weather is likely to continue into mid April.”

However, temperatures are predicted to rise later in April and could even hit 26C in some parts of the UK.

The Weather Outlook’s Brian Gaze recently told the Daily Star: “With computer models strongly favouring a warm spring, there is potential for the record for the hottest spring to be challenged.

“26C highs are likely in April. Plumes of warm air from Africa are expected.

“And there is an increased chance of a hot and settled summer due to the trend for more high pressure, which brings hot conditions in summer.”

A Met Office spokesperson told The Sun: “For March-May, above-average temperatures are more likely than below-average.”

Coral also cut the odds on a record-hot spring from 4/1 to 5/4.
