ITV branded ‘hypocrites’ for axing Jeremy Kyle Show but keeping Love Island

Two contestants who appeared on the reality show have died

ITV has been criticised for being “hypocritical” after it announced today that The Jeremy Kyle Show has been axed for good following the death of one of its guests, Steve Dymond.

It’s understood that Mr Dymond had approached the show in an attempt to prove he hadn’t been unfaithful to his partner, Jane Callaghan, but he failed the lie detector test and his relationship ended.

Days after the episode was filmed, Mr Dymond is believed to have taken his own life last Thursday.

Fans have now criticised ITV for cancelling the daytime show but not axing ITV2 reality show Love Island despite two of its contestants, Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis, taking their own lives after appearing on the programme.

People flocked to Twitter to accuse ITV of being “hypocritical”.

One person wrote: “Bit hypocritical of @itv to cut @ITVJeremyKyle off, when 2 people from @LoveIsland had sadly committed suicide as well, yet its still on the air (I’m a LI fan but I don’t agree with one being shut off and not the other).”

Another said: “Hey @ITV so cancelling @ITVJeremyKyle because of suicide is the right decision – but you cannot continue #LoveIsland it is hypocritical!!!!!

“You have no choice cancel Love Island if you want the public to think you are genuine in #MentalHealthAwarness #itv #jeremykyleshow.”

A third tweeted: “Isn’t it hypocritical of ITV to axe #jeremykyle when both Sophie and Mike have died from #LoveIsland ? That should go too!”

Another said: “Don’t get me wrong, #LoveIsland is one of my favourite shows but  @ITV are hypocrites if they don’t cancel it after they’ve cancelled #thejeremykyleshow.”

Sophie, 32, who appeared on Love Island in 2016, took her own life in June 2018 and her boyfriend Aaron Armstrong later took his own life in similar circumstances.

In March this year, another Love Island contestant, Mike Thalassitis, was found hanged in a north London park.

On Monday morning, ITV pulled an episode of The Jeremy Kyle Show that Mr Dymond featured in.

Two days later on Wednesday, ITV announced it has permanently scrapped the programme after criticism from Mr Dymond’s family and viewers.
