The essential facts about tonight’s most heartbreaking ever Emmerdale

Chas and Paddy say goodbye to their newborn daughter

It’s the moment Chas and Paddy – and viewers – have been dreading.

In tonight’s episode the expectant mum will give birth to her baby daughter, knowing that she will have to say goodbye to her almost immediately.

At her 20-week scan, Chas discovered that her unborn child has bilateral renal agenesis, which means her baby has no kidneys and her lungs will be underdeveloped.

She also learned that her baby wouldn’t live for very long outside of the womb.

Deciding against a termination, she and Paddy have been preparing for this day – full of the best possible joy and worst ever grief – since.

Here’s what you need to know about tonight’s episode:

Chas will give birth to her and Paddy’s daughter tonight after going into labour in Friday’s episode, and she is named Grace.

The episode will feature a special flash-forward format, which sees both Paddy and Chas imagine what life would be like with their little girl as she grows up. They see her at the ages of one, four and 12.

Dominic Brunt, who plays Paddy, told This Morning: “Very early on, Lucy [Pargeter] had a line which said, ‘If this baby lives for three seconds or three minutes or 30 minutes, that’s her life and we have to give her the best life that we can possibly do.’

“And we imbue her with love and give her a scenario where she would have a future. And that’s what we do – it’s sort of a fantasy episode, where we jump into the future.”

It’s not all about the tragedy. Lucy explained to Metro.co.uk: The episode needs the lightness. We have had a massive build up of how awful it is going to be so to have that lightness is a relief.”

Viewers will see the moment the new parents are forced to say goodbye to their much-loved child, and the breakdown of them both.

The episode is, surprisingly, “full of hope”. Dominic added: “They’ve [the writers] really turned it around and gave it real hope, real love, and it really is incredible, and I urge anybody to tune in on Monday.

“It goes in real time, from the birth to the end, and it’s done with real love.”
