5 reminders why Corrie’s Blanche was just the best!

There are quite a few...

Who could possibly ever forget Coronation Street royalty Blanche Hunt, played by the wonderful Maggie Jones.

She made us laugh on many occasions throughout her times on the soap.

Sadly in October 2009 Maggie fell ill and was written out of Coronation Street, before passing away in December the same year. Blanche was then written out of the soap; the character passed away in May 2010 after suffering a heart attack in Portugal.

Here’s a reminder of what we are all missing… just because!

1 Her humour

Blanche was widely known for her famous one-liners.

When she attended an AA meeting to support grandson Peter Barlow, Deirdre pointed out that it wasn’t the Rovers, because she was gossiping. Blanche’s response was: “Just as well, or this lot would be foaming at the mouth.”

Blanche often liked to make little comments to her daughter. Deirdre once said she felt stupid and Blanche’s response was: “It’s taken you fifty odd years to realise that. Hallelujah.”

2 She was supportive

Blanche liked to show her support for her family in the most Blanche way possible.

A recovering alcoholic at the AA meeting spoke about the twelve steps and higher power. Clearly wearing her patience thin, she asked if he had finished, going on to say, “Well I’ve never heard so much self-indulgent whinging in all me life.”

When another ex-alcoholic chipped in to say he thought it was “very illuminating”, Blanche’s response was, “Well yer want to get out more. Wait till you try Bingo!”

At least she was there to support Peter!

3 Her honesty

Blanche certainly never held back when it came to her opinions. She once asked daughter Deirdre where Liz McDonald had got to after spending the night on their sofa.

She described Liz – “skirt no bigger than a belt, too much eyeliner, and roots as dark as her soul.”

She also told young great-grandson Simon Barlow while he was watching kids telly: “Your real Postman Pat rolls up around noon wearing a pair of shorts and his breakfast.

“And if he’s not chucking elastic bands like confetti, he’ll be rifling through your birthday cards for ready cash, or leaving your valuables out on the step.”

4 She loved drama

Wherever there was drama, Blanche was usually sitting front row along with Norris Cole. Becky McDonald once said she “reminded her of that old bird Lizzie, always sticking her nose into every bit of trouble.”

Even if she wasn’t sitting front row, she was still causing drama; once she got drunk in front of house guests telling them about Deirdre’s prison time, Ken’s affairs, Peter being an alcoholic and Leanne Battersby being an ex-prostitute. Needless to say, none of them were impressed.

5 She was a lot of fun

Blanche knew how to have a lot of fun. She once tested out a mobility scooter and went whizzing round the street.
