How did DIY SOS star Rhod Gilbert become famous?

Rhod was born in Carmarthen, Wales and attended Exeter University before taking time out after graduating to travel around Australia and Asia.

His first foray into the world of stand-up happened after a girlfriend nagged him to enter a comedy course.

Within 18 months he was winning awards and was soon nominated for the prestigious Perrier Newcomer Award for his first solo show at the Edinburgh Festival in 2005.

Radio sitcoms, sell-out tours and appearances at the Royal Variety Performance followed.

Since then Rhod has been a staple on TV shows like Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Would I Lie To You? and Have I Got News For You?

Who is Rhod married to and does he have children?

Rhod married long-time partner, award-winning comedy writer Sian Harris, in 2013.

The couple does not have children, and Rhod has been open about his infertility.

He’s mentioned it in a stand-up routine before, but he has now made the BBC documentary Rhod Gilbert: Stand Up To Infertility.

In an interview with Wales Online he said: “Most men don’t want to talk about this, and that isn’t going to change overnight because of this documentary, it’s going to take a long long time.

“Most men are not going to come up and talk to me, this is just the tip of the iceberg really. Once it goes out I suspect it will be very different.”

What happened to Rhod’s dad?

In late November 2020, Sian broke the news that Rhod’s beloved dad and her father-in-law had died aged 88.

She said on Twitter: “It’s with huge heavy hearts we share that Rhod’s brilliant Dad, my wonderful father in law, has died.

“What a hole he leaves, at 88, the most knowledgeable, jazz-piano playing, Russian-speaking, old-school socialist, progressive men I’ve ever met.

“We shall miss him terribly.”

Previously, Rhod had detailed how Malcolm had had a heart attack after the death of his mother Norma in 2016, from Alzheimer’s.

The heart attack had left Malcolm blind and with other complications, and he was in a care home when the Covid first hit.

Rhod movingly detailed how he raced back to Wales when the first lockdown was announced to care for him.

He said in The Mirror: “The care home locked down earlier than most and we got a message saying not to visit.

“Because he can’t see and he can’t move I got him a smart speaker.

“Whether we’ll see him again, I don’t know.

“He knows that if the virus gets into the care home he’s extremely vulnerable. In his words: ‘If it gets in here then I’m a gonner’.”
