Viewers hit out at “boring” National Television Awards

Others thought the whole thing was just awkward

As the winners of the 2019 National Television Awards nursed their sore heads this morning, many viewers of the show have complained that it’s all got a bit boring.

Venting their frustration on Twitter they felt the show had become predictable with the same people and shows winning year after year.

Arguably the most controversial win of the night went to Ant and Dec as Best TV Presenter when Ant has had the year off. Even Ant said he felt he couldn’t accept it.

The win was a record 18th for the duo, with not even 2018’s golden girl Holly Willoughby able to touch them.

This Morning also scooped the Best Daytime Programme Award for a ninth year in a row, with Holly and Phil turning up a little worse for wear to host Wednesday’s show.

The Bodyguard was the big winner on the night taking home Best New Drama and Best Drama Performance for lead actor Richard Madden. But the show had been such a big hit, many felt the win was an obvious one.

The only success that did come as a surprise – and delighted viewers – was Peaky Blinders scooping the Best Drama award. It seemed to be such a shock that no one actually made it to the ceremony!

“The NTAs are so predictable. The only surprise was Peaky Blinders and none of them showed up,” wrote one person.

Another agreed: “This old show needs a rethink,” while someone else said: “It seems the NTAs are tediously predictable.”

Others just thought the show was a bit awkward. They weren’t fans of Dani Dyer and Jack Fincham’s hosting skills in particular as they were tasked with backstage duties.

Others wins on the night included Danny Dyer who took home Best Serial Drama Performance for his role as Mick Carter in EastEnders.

The actor got choked up as he accepted his gong and then dropped the F-bomb live on stage, for which Dermot was forced to apologise.

Emmerdale’s James Moore took home Best Newcomer and thanked fans for supporting him.

The soap also bagged the Best Serial Drama gong.

The Chase was named Best Quiz and Strictly won Best Talent Show.
