Unsurprisingly, the show delighted fans and viewers were left in fits of hysterics – especially at a sketch which saw them dress up as posh Gogglebox couple Giles and Mary.

Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders were praised on Twitter for their ‘genius’ adaption of the Channel 4 stars in their popular sketch show – which is celebrating 30 years on air.

Tweeters described the duo’s take on Giles and Mary as ‘brilliant’ and the ‘greatest thing they’d ever seen’.

One viewer even called for the original Gogglebox faves to be made to watch the sketch on the telly programme dissection show saying it would create a ‘weird paradox’.

Dawn looked unrecognisable as po-faced Giles, dressed in a sleeveless knitted jumper and navy shirt.

And Jennifer seemed right at home, curled up on the sofa as unimpressed wife Mary.

On Christmas Day, the comedy duo went back to where it all began in the mid eighties, as the BBC celebrated the best of French And Saunders.
