Troubled Hollyoaks actor Paul Danan hits out at reality show producers for putting him on TV

Actor revealed he's been to rehab nearly TWENTY times

Ex reality star Paul Danan has slammed TV bosses for booking him on shows such as Love Island and Celebrity Big Brother because of his substance abuse troubles.

The former Hollyoaks actor, 40, revealed he has been to rehab nearly TWENTY times to battle his addiction woes during an appearance on The Jeremy Kyle Show earlier today – and hailed his mum for saving his life after he overdosed on heroin.

Revealing he last checked himself in for two months of therapy on his birthday last year, Paul said he managed to stay “good” for a further three months before relapsing a few weeks ago.

He also recounted how his mother managed to get him into an ambulance after passing out at his family’s home following a hunt for coke, even though it turned out he had actually snorted heroin.

One day I went to a meeting and on the way my car decided to detour and I was trying to find some coke. Which I did,” Paul said.

“I then went to a meeting and went back to my parents’ and told them I was going to sleep.”

“My mum came into the bedroom and heard me making these noises. It sounded like I was snoring but it was me choking on my last breaths.

“I was overdosing.”

He continued: “My parents found me in my bed and they didn’t know what was going on. They didn’t think I’d taken anything because I’d just come back from rehab.”

Asked why he continued to take drugs after nearly dying in front of his parents, Paul replied: “Because I’m an addict.”

Shown a clip of him brawling boozily with Calum Best from ITV2 reality show Calum, Fran and Dangerous Danan in 2006, he insisted: “I should never have done any of those shows really because I wasn’t well. I’m not well.”

The Londoner, who maintained he will never stop trying to stay clean, also said he even had to prioritise his recovery ahead of his young son.

“I’ve had 17 stints in rehab,” he said. “They do work. They’re amazing.”

“They’ve saved my life many times but it’s maintenance and it’s about sustaining that recovery and not putting anything before that recovery – even my little boy, who I love to death.”
