Coronation Street treats us with not one but two marriage proposals next week and as a little celebration of the forthcoming wedding fever we decided to take a look back at some of our favourite soapy proposals of all time.

Probably one of the cutest soap proposals of all time was when Billy Mitchell spelled out ‘Marry Me’ with alphabet spaghetti on Little Mo Slater’s plate.

After being married to one of the biggest, nastiest soap villains of all time – boo, hiss Trevor Morgan – Mo needed someone gentle, kind and caring like Billy.

And he stunned us all by proving he could actually spell.

Carl King to Chas Dingle – wing-walking

Chas and Carl were an Emmerdale match made in heaven. Or hell. We’re still not sure which. When things were good between them, they were so very good indeed.

Who can forget the moment a terrified Carl stood on the wing of a flying plane to prove his love to Chas who had been reluctant to accept his marriage proposal?

How can a girl say no to a man prepared to look death in the eye for you? Not Chas, that’s for sure.

Jim Branning to Dot Cotton – up the London Eye

Proposing with panache is NOT just a young person’s game as the wonderful Jim Branning proved when he popped the question to his beloved Dorothy in ‘Enders.

Dressed in their finest, he took his lady love up the Millennium Eye (oo-er) and asked if she’d be his wife.

And of course she said ‘Eye Do’. The pair tied the knot the following Valentine’s Day.

Fiz Brown to John Stape – banner in prison

When John was sentenced to two years in prison for kidnapping Rosie Webster and holding her hostage for five weeks, his ex-girlfriend Fiz panicked when she heard he was on suicide watch.

She visited him in prison and asked him to marry her via a banner which depressed John saw on CCTV.

The pair then got married in prison with Chesney and Hayley Cropper as witnesses. And then John was released and turned into a killer. So not exactly happily ever after.

Gary Windass to Sarah Platt – in hospital

Second time lucky for Gary and Sarah, after Sarah ditched him when she found out he’d got Nicola Rubinstein pregnant after a one night stand.

This time Gary popped the big Q after being beaten half to death by Sarah’s brother David.

Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle – seconds before Aaron drove them into a lake

Robert had the whole proposal planned beautifully but it all went horribly wrong when Aaron kidnapped Lachlan and stashed him in the boot of the car.

In the end, Robert ended up snapping out the proposal angrily mid-argument while Aaron was driving.

Seconds later Aaron drove them into a lake. It all very nearly didn’t end very well but Robert saved Aaron from drowning and when he came round in hospital his first word was ‘yes.’ Nawwwwwww.

Jamie Mitchell to Sonia Jackson – in front of the whole market

Jamie gave every 90s teen girl engagement goals before we even knew what goals were when he proposed to Sonia in front of the entire market.

The Square’s answer to Leo DiCaprio in Romeo and Juliet told Sonia he couldn’t live without her before dropping to one knee and and presenting her with Ethel’s ring.

Obviously Sonia couldn’t refuse. Such a shame that Martin mowed Jamie down just a few months later and killed him.

Ste Hay and John Paul McQueen – the boat

Is there anything quite as heartwarming as seeing Ste on one knee in Hollyoaks?

Ste actually popped the question to John Paul twice on Hollyoaks, but the first time was by far the best. And most epic. There was a rowing boat, a huge amount of tinsel and just so much love in the atmosphere.

He tried to recreate the moment the second time he proposed to JPM but it lacked the x-factor of the first one. Sob.

Robert Preston and Michelle Connor – after the race

Is there any better way to tell your love that you want them for life than when you’re panting and sweaty? We don’t think so.

And Robert Preston is in total agreement judging from his proposal to Michelle after the Race For Your Wife charity run.

It’s also possible he just misunderstood the title of the race. Shruggy-shoulder emoji.

Dan Spencer and Kerry Wyatt – Titanic on the pirate ship

Nothing wrong with this (Credit: ITV)

Ok, this was pretty bizarre actually. When Dan popped the question to Kerry it involved Ashley Thomas’ pirate ship and Dan dressed as Jack in Titanic.

Things got even weirder when Kerry arrived in a Rose-esque costume, a drag Celine Dion was thrown into the mix and Kerry realised she could be pregnant by Ross Barton.
