Host Bradley Walsh knew The Beast would lose

What happened with Mark Labbett on last night’s The Chase?

Towards the end of the episode, three contestants – Will, Deborah and John – remained to take on the chaser.

Playing for a prize pot of £14,000, they got 22 questions correct, which – with their three-step head start – set up an impressive 25 steps for Mark to beat.

“Thanks for watching everyone, see you next time,” host Bradley Walsh joked, suggesting the team had already won. “Wow that was amazing, 25. That was extraordinary. Well played.”

When Mark came on, he smiled as he said: “Anyone got a white flag handy? I might need it later on. Last time a chaser beat 25 was back in 2011.”

Luckily for the team, with their three push-backs Mark only achieved a score of 21.

He said afterwards: “I really enjoyed that! It’s not often you get a chance to absolutely go for it, and I have no problem when you guys win it. It’s when we lose it that we get upset. Well played, though.”

“What about that,” said Bradders. “A sensational chase.”

Reacting on Twitter, viewers were stunned to see The Beast get ‘battered’.

“What a team #TheChase,” one tweeted.

Another said: “That final chase was awesome today. They smashed it. #TheChase. What a team.”

Mark Labbett just got fully beasted.

“Some effort,” said a third. “He still got 21 and not sure how many wrong.”

Someone else thought the prize pot should have been bigger, writing: “It’s a genuine travesty that you walk away from #TheChase with less than five grand for battering The Beast.”

A fifth said: “#TheChase Go team, Will and John. @MarkLabbett just got fully beasted. Awesome from Will, such a young man. Takes some beating does the beast, big fan.”

Mark also took to social media to comment on the episode and praise the team.

He wrote: “To steal from the late great Richie Benaud, ‘Great quizzing all round’. Well played #thechase. I got 24/30 so it showed how good they were.”
