Talking about filming James' final scenes as Sidney Chambers, Robson recently admitted he cried - as did all of the cast and crew!

James, 33, has played Grantchester's Reverend Chambers since 2014, but bows out in the upcoming fourth series after becoming restless in the village.

When a civil rights campaigner from Alabama arrives in town, the Rev finds himself in the centre of an unfolding drama.

There wasn't a dry eye on set when we filmed those final scenes. Even the director was sobbing... It was so beautiful and very dramatic.

A heated demonstration at the church becomes violent and ends in a murder… But who dies?

Robson told What's On TV that James' leaving scenes were emotional.

Asked how he felt about James leaving after four years, he said: "We chat about it; I was in Sydney when series four was commissioned and James was doing a play in the West End.

"We spoke on the phone while he was in his dressing room, 10 minutes before he went on stage. We said it's okay because we'll be friends for ever anyway.

"There wasn't a dry eye on set when we filmed those final scenes. Even the director was sobbing... It was so beautiful and very dramatic. And then we all went out for a big meal, which was joyous."

In turn, James admitted the decision to leave the ITV series was "an emotional" one, admitting a true kinship with his co-star Robson.

He told the magazine: "Robson has been the best partner in crime both on and off screen. It's no secret that we have an amazing bromance!

"When Sidney's storyline with Amanda [his on-off girlfriend] was tied up and he chose the church over her, it seemed like that was the natural conclusion to his story. I felt it was time to give someone else a turn - if you want to carry on learning, you’ve got to take the plunge."

Sally Wainwright is currently writing a third series of Happy Valley, in which James plays psychopath Tommy Lee Royce, which will be on screen in the near future.

James has also starred as Andrei Bolkonsky in a big budget adaptation of War And Peace, Alex Godman in McMafia and even ventured into film with a starring role in Flatliners.

He is also hotly-tipped to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond...
