Lee Mead opens up about reason he left Casualty – then joined Holby City

He resurrected the role of Ben “Lofty” Chiltern

Actor Lee Mead has said he quit Casualty to see more of his daughter.

The star, 36, now in Holby City, told TV show This Morning that he wanted to spend more time with his seven-year-old daughter with ex-wife Denise Van Outen.

“I have my little girl Betsy and I was in Cardiff,” Lee said.

“I left Casualty, I wanted to see her more. Then they said, ‘do you want to come back in to Holby?’. And I thought, brilliant.

Lee resurrected the role of Ben “Lofty” Chiltern, which he played in fellow BBC One medical drama Casualty, in May.

“I have weekends off and I can come home every night. In terms of lifestyle, I can be home more. I feel really lucky,” he said.

Holby City is set in the same hospital as Casualty.

Lee and Denise met on talent show Any Dream Will Do – where he was a contestant and Denise was a judge.

Despite their split, they have remained on good terms and Denise shared a cute picture yesterday, as the former couple both appeared – separately – on ITV daytime.

Waiting to appear as a guest panellist, Denise shared a picture of herself watching Lee’s interview on This Morning on Twitter.

She captioned it: “Betsy’s mummy and daddy both on @itv today @this morning @loosewomen.”
