He told British GQ: “I’ll try and get into my local gym [before rehearsals].

“I’ll get up at 5-5.30 in the morning. Normally I wouldn’t be training that early, I’d be in at 7am, but you do what you have to do.”

I’m about five kilos lighter than I was a couple of months ago.

“It was a conscious thing in the first two weeks of training not to do anything too draining at the gym or on the legs, it was pretty much maintenance work.

“Then I start dance training at 10am, which would be until 10pm. I’m on my feet all day. It’s quite tiring, so I’ve always been quite pro carbs – I think they’re a great thing.”

Kelvin has upped his calorie intake to maintain his energy for rehearsals but revealed he has actually dropped around 11lbs thanks to his rigorous training.

He said: “I probably eat about 300-350g of carbs a day. About 160g of protein, about 60-80g of fat, which I think is about 2,500-3,000 calories. Carbs get a bad press, but they’re pretty important.

“I’ve stayed pretty lean, I’m about five kilos lighter than I was a couple of months ago. Which is fine, I think – it helps with the dancing.”

However, despite training hard during the week, Kelvin admitted he only gives 100 per cent during filming of the show.

He explained: “I want to peak in my performance. I don’t want to be sore, I’m always working at 70 per cent, I’m always leaving at least three to four reps in the tank.

“Saturday morning I’m relaxed and I make sure my head space is all right. With dancing it’s all about confidence.”
