John Barnes hits back at accusations of homophobic views in Celebrity Big Brother house

He's had a chance to give his side

John Barnes was quietly evicted from the Celebrity Big Brother house earlier this week in a surprise ‘back-door eviction’ that saw him leave without a fanfare.

That meant he was straight out without a crowd of people to greet him outside.

And he wasn’t able to have an immediate exit interview, like a regular CBB contestant.

The ladies of the house voted for him to go, partly because they felt he’d “shamed” Apprentice star Andrew over his relationship with Shane Jenek.

In last night’s episode of CBB John had the chance to set the record straight, and said he was disappointed to see the accusations of homophobia.

Emma asked him what it was like leaving through the back door, rather than in the traditional way.

John replied: “I preferred it. Coming out to all the pomp and ceremony and everything, I like to just keep out of the way.

“And in fact I’m glad it happened the way it did, obviously it was a bit of a shock when I came out and saw the programme last night, which then prepared me for tonight and what we’re gonna talk about.

“Because I was very disappointed with some of the suggestions of me being homophobic.

“And if I had come out, tonight, like this I would not have known that, and I would have been totally unprepared for the lie that was told about me.”

John was then shown a clip of the house ladies voting to boot him out for the things he’d said about Shane and Andrew.

He commented: “Had that been mentioned when we were in there, when they nominated me, we would have had it out then and there.

“I’m sure Shane would have been on my side because that’s not what happened at all.

“Throughout the programme we have all been teasing Andrew and Shane about their relationship. I’ve offered them my bed at least five times!”

John said that the confusion all came from a misconception about a conversation he’d had with Shane, where he’d appeared to suggest heterosexual men aren’t comfortable around gay men.

He clarified: “What I was actually saying is that society has made certain preconceptions whereby they feel a certain way towards… STRAIGHT men feel a certain way…

“So what I was saying is that when we feel a certain way, I’m talking about men, not me.

“This is where the miscommunication happened. When Shane spoke to Malika, Malika mistook what I was saying about society, to mean that ‘John feels uncomfortable.'”

“I was saying it was wrong to feel that way. Women, gays, transsexuals, black people – we all share a common theme.

“The discrimination we all feel is exactly the same, and I have spoken about this for 20 years in schools and universities. For me to come out to that was a big shock.”

John was followed out of the house last night by Ginuwine, leaving just 11 celebrities battling it out for victory.

Celebrity Big Brother continues tonight at 9pm on Channel 5.
