Disturbing unedited footage of The Jeremy Kyle Show has been handed to MPs as part of their inquiry into the death of show guest Steve Dymond.
The show was pulled off air back in the spring when Dymond took his own life, days after failing a lie detector test on the show.
The news comes after it was alleged during an inquest that Dymond was sent home in a taxi after telling a researcher on the show: “I wish I was dead.”
As part of the investigation, The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee asked ITV to provide unedited footage of the chat show for review.
And, it appears, they’re not happy with what they’ve seen.
Do you accept that Jeremy Kyle at times demeaned and humiliated contributors?
The Mirror reports that footage shows “vulnerable” guests being “demeaned and humiliated” by the “aggressive” host.
Their findings are said to show the presenter using “demeaning and insulting language”, asking a woman a “humiliating” question about her sexual partners and encouraging his audience to jeer contributors.
As a result, ITV Studios’ MD Julian Bellamy has been asked to explain whether ITV condones Kyle’s approach to his guests.
In an open letter, the MPs ask: “Why is it one rule for the presenter and one for contributors? Do you accept that this level of provocation, towards often vulnerable contributors with no TV experience, is highly unethical?”
Another clip that’s been handed over is said to show the presenter instructing the audience on how to “boo” and shout “off off” at a guest.
He also refers to the crew on the show as “my staff” and “set a power dynamic with his body language” by standing over guests and using insulting language towards them.
The letter stated: “Do you accept that Jeremy Kyle at times demeaned and humiliated contributors, setting a power dynamic via his body language by standing over them, and using mockery and insulting language?”
A spokesperson for ITV previously said: “As a producer and broadcaster, ITV takes its responsibilities around duty of care to participants very seriously.”
Back in August it was revealed that Jeremy Kyle was filming a pilot for a new show with the network.
