We’ve recently seen storylines ranging from child sex abuse, to Phelan’s reign of terror over the Street… and viewers are starting to complain Corrie is getting too depressing.

But Corrie actor Tristan Gemmill has hit back at claims that the show is getting too dark during a recent chat with Metro.co.uk

While chatting about his character, Robert Preston’s, testicular cancer storyline, Tristan said: ‘People are entitled to that opinion but we haven’t lost the humour which is part of the DNA of the show.

“There’s so much more content hurtling towards people these days and so much more choice than just the three channels.

“Audiences have become a lot more sophisticated with what they can deal with.”

Ofcom recently received 390 complaints about the dark murder scenes in Corrie recently which starred Pat Phelan.

But Tristan said he thinks the storyline is fantastic.

He also lavished praise on co-star Connor McIntyre – and hinted he’ll get his “comeuppance eventually”.

“He is an actor at the height of his powers and the writers just love writing for him. Obviously, he’s a wrong ‘un and in the law of soaps, he will get his comeuppance eventually – it’s a question of playing it out.”

Talking of his own current storyline, Tristan was quick to defend the writers at Corrie. “As for things like testicular cancer, these aren’t dark storylines – our job is to hold a mirror up to the world.

With Christmas coming up, Corrie is bound to have some drama in store for the viewers.

But it won’t all be doom and gloom. Corrie bosses have promised some light-heatred storylines as well.
