But it appears viewers on Twitter struggled to get past the somewhat awkward atmosphere and stunted conversation.

One said: “#Madonna sure was an awkward watch on #GrahamNorton.”

Another wrote: “How awkward was that interview with Madonna? Hate how she comes so arrogant.”

A third tweeted: “It’s still fascinating and also very sad that megastars like Madonna can be so awkward in interviews. I wonder if medication or just fame is to blame? They rarely seem happy. #GrahamNorton.”

A fourth commented: “Last night’s #GrahamNorton was entertaining as usual except Madonna. Embarrassing. Weird, monotone, barely able to hold a conversation. More charisma in a block of ice. And the one thing you don’t do is be rude to a legend. Sir Ian upstaged her effortlessly. Give it up love.”

At one point in the programme, Madonna was asked about meeting fellow guest Sir Ian McKellen at a charity event in the 1990s but admitted she couldn’t remember the encounter.

Graham then asked the acting legend about his recent 80th birthday celebrations.

His friends threw him a surprise party in Bolton, where he grew up, and Graham said: “Was it wise? They gave you a surprise party at 80…”

The Lord of the Rings actor replied: “Yes, I think they were a little bit frightened I might have a heart attack.”

He said some of the guests had flown in from LA and threw a glance at Madonna, but the singer said: “Wasn’t me…”

Sir Ian then quipped: “You weren’t invited because you didn’t remember working with me!”

Not everyone was turned off, as fans of the Like A Prayer singer and non-fans alike rallied behind her on social media.

Someone tweeted: “British people are such harsh cruel people… @Madonna was great and full of humour on #GrahamNorton! All jealous people, disgusting!”

Another said: “Got to say, Madonna came across OK, down to earth even. Not a fan but fair dues…”
