Exploring the true inspiration behind BBC One’s Everything I Know About Love

The show is based on Dolly Alderton's real life and memoir, but what has been fictionalised?

Everything I Know About Love focuses on the central love story between childhood best friends Maggie and Birdy – but is it a true story?

The cast is brilliant, including Bel Powley who plays Birdy.

She’s known for her roles on the Morning Show and Diary of a Teenage Girl.

Meanwhile, Emma Appleton plays Maggie, who you might know from Pistol and the Witcher.

The BBC One series also centres around the rest of their girl group – set in a 2012 London house-share inhabited by four girls.

The series emotionally and comedically chronofiles the relationships, heartbreaks and struggles of 20-somethings.

The show mainly asks the question: can platonic love survive romantic love as we grow up?

So how much of Everything I Know About Love true?

How much of Is Everything I Know About Love true?

Fans of the show will know each episode starts with a statement.

The statement reads: “This work is inspired by real events and real people.

“(But fictionalised when life didn’t offer a good enough story).”

So, although the series was inspired by real life, some artistic license has been taken!

But what is fictional and what is real?

Dolly Alderton, the author of the book that the series is based on, says that she began optioning the show years ago before the book was even finished.

She says: “I was working out what elements of the book I wanted to put on screen and fictionalise because it actually covers my whole life.

“It’s the most vivid period of my life; my 20s, the decade of wilderness and learning.”

Dolly Alderton says the thing that was most important for her to keep in the show was “the central drama of two best girlfriends who’d grown up together and their story as a romantic story”.

Alderton says she aims to tell the story “as you would in a romantic comedy”.

She adds: “I also wanted to capture that girl gang that I feel resonates with a lot of people who have read my book.”

Is Everything I Know About Love true? Who are the people in the show based on?

Dolly Alderton says: “The people who inspired the story are my best mates.

“They miraculously decided to carry on talking to me and being friends with me even after I wrote about them relentlessly for years.

“I’m so lucky and they are really happy.

“Imagine if they weren’t happy, I wouldn’t have a TV show.”

What is different in the books?

The biggest change from the books is the names – the main character is named Dolly, directly after its author.

Her best friend is named Lauren, not Birdy like in the show.

AJ and Farly form the rest of the girl group in the book, named Amara and Nell in the series.

Fans of the book will be happy to know most of the plot and stories from the book remain the same when adapted to the screen.

When was the book published and when is it set?

The book was published in 2019 but the bulk of the novel is set at the same time as the TV series – 2012.

As Dolly Alderton says: “Something that I really wanted to give to the readers of the book who were coming to the TV show was to retain that millennial nostalgia.

“It will be a nice throwback.

“I can’t believe that my childhood is now a piece of nostalgia.”

The 2012 nostalgia is strong in the show, as Alderton says: “All the clothes were so authentic.

“Basically everything is from a high street shop in 2012 or from a vintage shop in Camden.”
