EastEnders star Tanya Franks (aka Rainie Cross) on the return of Tanya Branning

Is Tanya going to follow her sister back to Walford?

Rainie Cross has been revealed as Max Branning’s new wife – which was pretty surprising even by soap standards.

In last night’s EastEnders (Tuesday 24 April), Max introduced his spouse to shocked Walford residents. But, of course, they already knew her as Max’s ex-wife’s drug addict sister!

As soon as Rainie was revealed to be Max’s wife, soap fans began speculating about what this meant. Could it really be true love (doubtful), or is there another reason behind the union?

And several Twitter fans hoped this meant the return of Rainie’s sister Tanya… Although we’re not sure what she’d think of the nuptials.

In an interview with the Radio Times, actress Tanya Franks reveals she’d love Jo Joyner to return to the soap, too.

Asked if Tanya Branning might make a comeback and make things awkward for the newlyweds, she said: “Well, it’s lovely working with Jo, so if we had the chance to work together again, that would be a blessing.

“But Jo is busy doing lots of other shows as well at the moment and I don’t know whether she’s part of the story in the future.”

The on-screen sisters both appeared briefly on-screen at the deathbed of Tanya’s daughter Abi in January.

Tanya’s character Rainie had previously been away from the soap for three years but now she explains “we’re going to find out what Rainie is like without having to rely on substances”.

Clean and married, Rainie’s future looks brighter – but is her marriage for real?

Tanya explains: “I think Max and Rainie are working really well together. I think the chemistry and the dynamic is something that has taken us all by surprise.”

Giving little away, she concluded: “I would say nobody would imagine what it’s like for Rainie and Max to be together, so the only way to discover how potentially successful or disastrous this could be is just to view it and find out.”

Meanwhile, eagle-eyed TV fans might have noticed that as well as marrying Max Branning at 7.30pm on BBC1, actress Tanya Franks was seen divorcing someone at 9pm on the same channel!

She starred in new drama The Split, opposite an impressive cast including Nicola Walker, Stephen Tompkinson, Meera Syal, Stephen Mangan and Anthony Head.
