EastEnders star Richard Blackwood wanted to toughen character Vincent Hubbard up

Show bosses said no!

EastEnders actor Richard Blackwood has revealed he wasn’t too impressed with how his on-screen alter ego Vincent Hubbard acted in scenes with Irish gangster Aidan Maguire.

As fans of the BBC soap saw the previously hard-as-nails Vincent roll over like a puppy when Aidan waived his walking stick at him, and hand over his bar, The Albert.

Richard, who bows out of the show in the coming weeks, told Inside Soap that he’d have liked Vincent to be a bit less wimpish and have a proper showdown with Aidan.

In fact, he even suggested some scene changes.

The comedian-turned-actor revealed: “This is where I had love for Patrick Bergin because there were scenes where he’d go, ‘I wouldn’t be able to do this to Vincent in real life!’

“We laughed about it as we understood that it had to be written that way for a reason, but there were times when I would say, ‘C’mon, can I just hit him a little bit?’ And they’d say, ‘No, Richard. It’s not in the script!'”

It was announced last month that Richard would be leaving his role after playing Vincent for three years.

A spokesperson for the BBC soap confirmed his exit in a statement saying: “We can confirm that Richard will be leaving EastEnders this spring.

“Richard has been a great addition to the show and we wish him all the best for the future.”

Richard himself told The Mirror: “I have loved every minute of my time at EastEnders and although I will be sad to say goodbye, after three years it feels the right time to leave.

“I have been truly blessed with some great storylines since the moment I joined but when I was presented with my last story I knew it was time for Vincent to depart Walford.”

How Vincent departs the Square isn’t yet known but it’s been suggested that he could be leaving in a coffin rather than a cab!

Next week fans will see Vincent, desperate for cash, turn to his old profession as a police informant and land Aidan and Phil Mitchell in trouble for the New Year’s Day heist.

Yes, that again.
