Last Tango In Halifax writer Sally Wainwright reveals fifth series of BBC drama

There's also good news for fans of Happy Valley

Screenwriter Sally Wainwright has 'let slip' there will be a fifth series of Last Tango in Halifax.

Sally, 56, also known for TV hits Scott & Bailey and Happy Valley, admitted moves are already underway to produce new episodes of the BBC drama.

Speaking at a screening of BBC One’s Gentleman Jack, Sally said she is currently penning more instalments for the BAFTA-winning series starring Anne Reid, Sir Derek Jacobi, Sarah Lancashire and Nicola Walker.

"It's not been officially announced that we're doing any more Last Tango - but I'm writing the third episode at the moment," she revealed during a Q&A session.

According to The Examiner, the audience at the showing in Halifax’s Square Chapel cinema cheered the announcement.

However, Sally is reported to have "buried her head in hands" at the reaction - although hopefully she won’t get any grief for giving fans such good news!

I'm writing the third episode at the moment.

Sir Derek had previously suggested there would be no more updates to the series following the Christmas specials in 2016.

"No, I’m afraid it’s not," the Alan Buttershaw actor told the Radio Times when asked in late 2017 if he expected the show to be returning.

Referring to how in demand Sally had become, he added: "She’s a wonderful writer, but she’s got so much work that Tango is finished."

Acclaimed telly writer Sally also said Happy Valley fans can look forward to more of West Yorkshire crime drama in the future.

She confirmed: "There will be a third Happy Valley, I don't know when, but it's always been the plan that there's a third one."
