Doctor Foster writer teases MURDER in traumatic series finale

Could Gemma kill her own son in echoes of an infamous Greek tragedy?

BBC drama Doctor Foster has been reeling in viewers with its dark story of adultery and revenge for the second series .

But fans could be in for a brutal twist ending as theories have been made suggesting Gemma, played by Suranne Jones, could end up murdering her own son, Tom.

The show creator, Mike Bartlett, has made a jaw-dropping revelation that the series if loosely based on Greek mythology story Medea.

Mike said the characters in the drama series are based on the tragedy of Medea.

She was a Greek figure who murdered her own children in an act of revenge for her husband leaving her for a princess.

It was never confirmed if Medea killed her children by accident or on purpose but her story is definitely a dark one and it certainly has similarities to the drama.

Despite Doctor Foster being loosely based on the drama could this be the ending that the show takes?

Mike told the Radio Times: “In the original pitch, I never actually said, ‘We’re going to do Medea at 9pm on BBC,’ because it probably wouldn’t have gone down very well. But that idea was always behind it.”

Mike refused to comment on the plot but said: “Depending on what happens at the end of series two, a third might not be possible. That’s all I can say really.”

Speaking about Gemma’s character, Mike added: “I wanted to take some of those misogynist ideas about mad women and witches, and hopefully subvert them.

“I get upset when people describe Gemma as mad. I don’t think she is; she’s just very angry.

“If it was a man behaving like that, you wouldn’t say he was mad. You’d say he was fighting back.”

The show has definitely been full of drama since its return this year.

We followed Dr. Gemma while she discovered her husband Simon’s affair in the first series and now as she seeks revenge in series two.

In last week’s thrilling episode we saw Gemma seduce Simon in the hopes of filming their sexual encounter to show his girlfriend Kate.

But her ex-husband figured out her plan and labelled her “desperate”.

Despite being caught out, Gemma pressed on and eventually led Simon to her bedroom.

At the end of the episode, Gemma and son Tom agreed that there is nothing left for them in Parminster and put their house up for sale.

The drama continues tonight at 9pm on BBC.
