"After 10 years of proudly hosting the National Television Awards, I have decided it’s time to step down as host," he wrote.

"It’s been a tough decision because we have had a ball over the last decade, but 10 years feels about right.

"I would like to thank Indigo and my ITV family for a brilliant ten years and look forward to proudly passing on the baton in 2020... and a holiday in January!"

His fans were disappointed to read his message.

One replied: "Sad news but wishing you all the very best for whatever you have planned for the future."

Another said: "Aaah no!!! Won't be the same without you."

A third quipped: "Odds on Ant and Dec hosting? I’m thinking 1/100."

Dermot, 45, recently joked that he would quit showbiz if Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly won Best Presenter at this year’s NTAs.

Lo, the duo did indeed collect the gong for an 18th consecutive year, and cheekily wished Dermot a "happy retirement" during their acceptance speech.

Fortunately, Dermot isn’t absenting himself from the showbiz world just yet.

He will continue to present The X Factor and host his BBC Radio 2 breakfast show.
