Declan Donnelly admits to sleepless night over Saturday Night Takeaway

Surely everyone can relate to this?

| Updated:

Millions of people spent their soggy Easter Saturday evening tuning into Saturday Night Takeaway, as Declan Donnelly hosted the prime-time juggernaut alone.

This was a big deal, as all telly lovers know – the first time he has presented a show without his co-star and best friend Ant McPartlin.

Ant is, of course, currently back in rehab following his car crash and subsequent drink-driving charge last month.

But the pressure this weekend was all on Dec, after he took the decision with ITV to complete the series of Takeaway by himself.

And his nerves as he took to the stage were palpable, with many viewers watching with their hearts in their mouths – willing him to get through it.

Once he was in his stride – and perhaps had caught a glimpse of the avalanche of love coming his way on social media – Dec well and truly smashed it.

He made no direct reference to Ant’s absence, choosing instead to make a few jokes about him being alone – which went down well with viewers.

And he waited until the very end of the show to express his heartfelt thanks for the support the audience had given him.

A little while after the show, Dec thanked everyone again – this time on Twitter. He also confessed that he’d had a pretty sleepless night ahead of the show.

“Thanks for all your lovely messages tonight, they are VERY much appreciated, I’m glad you enjoyed the show. I didn’t sleep an awful lot last night so I’m off to bed! Night y’all. D x”

Dec surely slept like a log after the weight of all that responsibility and expectation was off his shoulders last night – he deserved it!
