Dancing On Ice star Bez’s childhood struggles after being thrown out by parents following prison stint

Felt he 'wasn't understood' while growing up

Dancing On Ice star Bez has proved the great survivor on the 2022 series of the ITV skating show.

The Happy Mondays and Black Grape band member, 57, has also enjoyed plenty of TV fame over the past few years, thanks to appearances on Celebrity Gogglebox and Celebrity Masterchef.

But even though Bez has broken through into the mainstream with his wacky persona, he has previously opened up about how he struggled in his younger years and also experienced prison.

Dancing On Ice: Bez on ‘major problems growing up’

Speaking to The Guardian in 2015, Bez pinpointed how his father’s occupation as a police officer presented him with one of his “major problems growing up”.

That’s because, Bez claimed, he found such a “strong authoritarian background” very “difficult” to handle.

Bez also indicated his dad “didn’t understand his character” while he was growing up.

He said at the time: “I became quite unruly.”

Bez also pondered whether his behavioural problems may have stemmed from an “absolutely unnecessary” measles jab.

‘A life of crime’

In the same interview, Bez explained how he became involved in gang battles.

However, he insisted that part of his life did not last long as he decided it wasn’t how he wanted to live.

Nonetheless, he ended up living with his grandparents after his mum and dad threw him out of the family home.

Sadly, that was not the end of Bez’s turbulent home life, though.

I went to prison at the age of 17.

The dad-of-three recalled: “Then I went to prison at the age of 17, to detention centre, and I remained there until I was 20.

“That – and having kids – made me change how I wanted to live as I didn’t want my kids growing up thinking that was the way to live your life.”
