Craig Revel Horwood reveals why he doesn’t want to be Strictly’s head judge

Strictly star addresses why he didn't take over from Len Goodman

When head judge Len Goodman left Strictly Come Dancing after the 2016 series, his natural successor appeared to be Craig Revel Horwood.

Like Len, the 53-year-old choreographer has been on the show since it first aired in 2004, and is famed for his honest (and sometimes harsh!) feedback to the celeb contestants.

Len, 74, was replaced as head judge by dance champion Shirley Ballas.

Now Craig has spoken out about why he didn’t want the top job.

“I don’t see myself as a mediator. The role as head judge… you have to be the mediator and I am who I am and love the job I do,” he told the Daily Express.

“I wouldn’t give it up for the world. I didn’t want the responsibility, I like where I am at the moment I think it’s good.”

He added that he thinks Shirley was “a fantastic choice” as Len’s replacement, especially as he thinks it’s important to have women in high-ranking positions.

“She also knows exactly what she is talking about and she tells people the truth and I love that,” he said.

However, Shirley wasn’t always popular with everyone after she clashed with Brendan Cole over his routines with Charlotte Hawkins – whose name she also got wrong.

Viewers also accused her of putting too much technical dance jargon into her appraisals.

But the 57-year-old is expected to return to the next series, along with Craig, Bruno Tonioli and Darcey Bussell.

Speaking on Loose Women in May, Shirley said she has been “verbally asked” to return as head judge.

“I’ve been verbally asked but as of yet I haven’t had a contract, but of course I would be highly delighted to go back on that most fabulous show. I had the time of my life,” she said.

The BBC have also yet to confirm which celebrities will be taking part. Names in the frame include Anneka Rice, Nadiya Hussain and Chris Kamara.

Meanwhile, the professionals who will be taking to the dance floor have been confirmed.
