Corrie’s Richard Hawley didn’t want to do Aidan suicide

Actor's initial thought was "I don't think I can do that..."

Coronation Street’s Richard Hawley has admitted that he was initially ‘frightened’ to take on Aidan’s suicide storyline because it’s a subject close to his heart.

The actor told Good Morning Britain earlier today that the storyline in which we saw Johnny Connor’s son Aidan take his own life last month, left him nervous at first…

“I was quite frightened. My first response was, ‘I don’t think I can do that’.

“I was also very pleased because it is something close to my heart and to get the opportunity to get to do something that has a campaigning element like that is a wonderful opportunity.”

But after overcoming his initial nerves, Richard knew that the storyline would not only become part of Coronation Street history, but would also raise awareness for a vital cause.

“The intention of the story is to make a difference in the real world, to jump through the TV screens from our fiction and for people to recognise it as something that’s actually going on.

“So we knew we had to create moments that had that kind of power which was beyond the fiction we normally watch and could somehow punch out and affect real people and make a real change out there.”

The Connor family were left heartbroken when Aidan took his own life after planning it for months, and the fall out of his death has been huge in Weatherfield.

Not only did no one see it coming, but he has also left behind a new daughter in little baby Susie.

Since the truth that Susie is Eva and Aidan’s daughter has been revealed, there is now a bitter custody battle going on as Johnny plans to fight Eva for his granddaughter.

Actress Catherine Tyldesley has also just filmed her final scenes on the soap, but the big question every Corrie fan wants to know is: will Eva leave the cobbles with her daughter in her arms?

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
