Coronation Street tipped for success at the British Soap Awards despite its controversial storylines

It's obviously doing something right!

The bookies are predicting that Coronation Street will win big at this year’s British Soap Awards – despite all the complaints about its dark storylines.

The voting has begun for the awards, which take place in June, and the bookies are tipping Corrie to take the Best Soap crown from Emmerdale this year.

Coronation Street last won the title of Best Soap in 2013, but it looks like this could be its year as bookmakers Coral has it favourite to win. Emmerdale’s currently in second place, according to Coral.

And Corrie is also tipped to scoop other big awards on the night, too.

And Lucy Fallon, who plays Bethany Platt, could take home the Best Actress award.

Corrie’s come under fire this year for its dark storylines, with Pat Phelan’s murderous rampage around the cobbles coming in for a lot of criticism.

Bethany’s sexual exploitation story also attracted some negative feedback with fans thinking the hard-hitting tale was too much for viewers.

Some big names have even joined the voices complaining about Coronation Street being too gruesome.

Former Corrie star Bruce Jones, who played Les Battersby, said the show had gone too far, and chat show legend Michael Parkinson agreed.

And recently TV presenter Fern Britton said David Platt’s rape ordeal was too dark for the soap.
