“Comedy gold”: Corrie viewers hysterical at Steve and Leanne’s engagement

Pay rise for whoever suggested the Jaws theme tune, thanks guys

| Updated:

By our figures, this weekend saw Corrie viewers witness Steve McDonald’s 77th engagement. And he’s made it a classic.

Because despite not being in a relationship and/ or love with Leanne, he’s gone for it anyway. Part of us really, really admires his optimism.

Steve’s proposal came after he and Leanne had baby Oliver together earlier this year, following a long, deep love affair. Oh wait, we mean a one-night stand.

At first Leanne had the most natural response at Steve’s question – laughing hysterically then going to the pub with her sisters, standard.

But then she had some drinks/ compared Steve to Aidan and inevitably, she started thinking two things, firstly ‘Hell yeah maybe I will marry Steve’ and secondly, ‘Oooh, kebabs.’

Leanne headed home with two doners – her second worst decision of the night – to tell Steve the good news that she accepted with a super-romantic line.

“The answer’s yeah,” she said. “I’d marry the backside off you Steve.”

Seriously, romance, right there.

Steve replied with an open-mouthed “Did you just…?” before Leanne cut him off with “Yeah I did you big numpty, come here, I’ll marry you.”

Viewers were loving the storyline though, praising it as classic Corrie comedy, as producers played the Jaws theme tune in the background.

One posted: “Most bizarre proposal and acceptance ever.”

Another wrote: “Steve and Leanne, comedy gold.”

A third added: “OK, that bit of Jaws music over Steve and Leanne at the end was genius.”

The wedding – if it goes ahead, and that’s a big if because, you know, soap – would be Steve’s seventh after he previously married Vicky, Karen (twice, long story), Tracy, Becky and most recently Michelle.

He and Michelle split when she found out he’d had a baby with Leanne, after they lost a baby of their own.

Leanne’s got a bit of marriage experience on her soap CV too as she was previously married to Nick Tilsley (twice, long story) and also to Peter Barlow, whose son Simon she adopted.

These two are going to be seriously limited on new ideas for favours but on the plus side, they must have some cracking catering contacts.
