This Morning viewers can’t believe Coronation Street’s William Roache is 87

Eamonn Holmes revealed the actor's real age

Fans of This Morning were bowled over when Coronation Street legend William Roache appeared on the show and Eamonn Holmes revealed the actor’s real age.

William was on the sofa to talk to Eamonn and Ruth Langsford about his new book: Life and Soul: How to Live a Long and Happy Life.

While they were chatting, Eamonn asked his secret: “Without embarrassing you, I want to say, you’re 87 years of age and you just look stupendous, you could easily pass for 55, 60, is that luck, is that nature, or is that nurture?

“Well, it’s the genes to begin with,” William replied. “But then it’s what you do with them.”

He continued: “Aging is a belief system, if you think ‘as I get older I’m going to get slower, I’m 5o now I can’t do this’ you will slow down.

“The cells renew themselves all the time and if you slow down the cell renewal process slows down.”

The Ken Barlow actor then proceeded to explain the rules he lives by: “There are certain basics: are you getting enough sleep? You need your seven to eight hours, the body heals itself when you’re sleeping.

“Food, you can’t get your five-a-day, but you want to get as many fresh vegetables, food that hasn’t got chemicals in, where you can. Moderation and enjoyment.

“Exercise, fresh air, and stress of course. That’s where meditation can come in.”

Fans couldn’t get over how good he looks for his age.

William also revealed he goes to a fitness class called Fun Fit: “It’s absolutely wonderful, we do a bit of boxing a bit of basketball, it’s all very competitive.

“It’s young children and me – the full spectrum of people. By the end of it, you’re absolutely knackered!”

With Ken still at the forefront of many storylines in the soap, most recently trying to help his youngest son Daniel cope with the death of his wife Sinead, William insists meditation is the key to coping with the stresses of life.

“Basically I call it a tea break from life,” he said.

“Find a place in your home, a chair, as you walk towards that you leave all your worries, all your cares, sit in that chair and have a tea break from life. Just do that for five minutes.”

Well if it leaves us looking that good at 87, we might just give it a go!
