However, after a week of silence she has now spoken out to insist she has not quit after making a joke on Celebrity Juice about being on the soap for ‘too long’.

She slammed the “silly rumours” and tweeted: “Unlucky timing with my sarcastic humour on CelebJuice when these silly rumours are going around.

“I have not ‘quit’ Corrie, I am contracted well into this year and am fully committed to our long-running storyline. We do not know the outcome as of yet, which is how we like it!”

Katie added: “I LOVE working at Corrie and LOVE everyone there! It’s a fabulous place to work FYI #luckygal.”

A source had told The Sun newspaper: “Katie has just been nominated for a British Soap Award so it’s a big loss and not what bosses would have wanted to hear.”

At the time, a Coronation Street spokesperson refused to reveal whether Katie had quit – insisting any comment would ruin the storyline for viewers.

They said: “Katie is fully committed to playing out the extremely important storyline she is currently portraying on screen.

“This story still has a long way to go. Any speculation threatens to undermine the storyline for viewers.”

Katie’s character Sinead has been battling ovarian cancer during her pregnancy with baby Bertie.

She went on to give birth to health-stricken Bertie, but he later recovered enough to come home and Sinead finished her cancer treatment.

The storyline is set to continue, meaning Sinead’s treatment could have been unsuccessful, with even Katie previously admitting she could be leaving the soap this year.

Katie said: “I’m contracted well into this year but it is up in the air. Although I have to wait and see what happens, I quite like not knowing.

“With the nature of my storyline, I guess it’s 50/50. Either way I’d be happy, though.”
